One-Armed Scissor: A Free Starter Adventure for the Wildsea, Out Now!
– Wed, Mar 15, 2023 at 06:55:41 AM
Hello kickstarter people, Felix here with a mini-update for you with a free thing that you might enjoy!
One-Armed Scissor is a 22(ish?) page starter adventure PDF for the Wildsea. I hope you enjoy it, and get some use out of it (even if you don't actually *play* the thing as an adventure it has some advice in there for pre-game preparation, random location generation, encounter creation etc etc that might be of interest)!
Here are a pair of links to where you can download it, one to my patreon and one to my itch page. It's entirely free in both places, or at least it should be if I've set it all up right!
Another 100 community copies of the Wildsea PDF have been released on the itch page, thanks to you lovely kickstarter sorts and the funding goals you reached during the campaign. So if you have friends that are intrigued by the rustling waves but short on cash, tell them it's time to swoop in and grab a digital copy for themselves! You'll find them HERE, at the bottom of the main Wildsea page.
Big update coming very soon, so hold onto your submersible-shaped hats!
Felix out :)

Hey EU Backers,
Friendly reminder that if you have any issues with your order or books, please email us directly at: [email protected]
We're trying to funnel all customer support through there, so doing so will save us some time from directing you there via Kickstarter or some other means!
Thanks!

EU Shipping Update: Books are Out!

Ahoy European Wildsailors!
We're getting many reports that European backers are finally receiving their books! Huzzah! If this is you, please post in the comments on this Kickstarter page or in this update below! We have it on reliable word that most of the books should be delivered by the end of next week.
That means that this Kickstarter is officially coming to a close! We're of course still working on the Wild Words SRD and some other bits and ends (with hopefully a pleasant surprise next week), but our focus now officially shifts over to Airships and Submersibles, which we're hoping to launch next month.
EU Shipping Update: (Some Positive News, For Once)

Hey Everyone,
European Backers, I finally have some good news.
Your books are now with Spiral Galaxy UK, and awaiting to be dispatched shortly! We've shipped our European orders to them, and they're now preparing an invoice for us. From there, they'll be shipped (hopefully in the next 1-2 weeks) and from there should take only a couple of days to arrive at your doors. You'll receive an email when your package has shipped with a tracking #, and the VAT has already been accounted for meaning there shouldn't be a hold up in customs or additional charges.
A huge thank you to Maz, Chris, Grant, and the rest of the Rowan Rook and Decard crew for helping us out on this. After months of pounding pavement trying to find a solution to our shipping woes, we ended up calling an audible from our friends asking help. They came through in a big way, so a huge thank you to our lovely British colleagues who make such wonderful games. We owe you a pint and a joint.
From us, my apologies that it's taken so long to get these books out. I understand how frustrating it is to be last in queue, especially given some of the reports that have popped up of The Wildsea being available at some retail stores in Europe. This wasn't something we expected (we were under the impression they would sell only to retailers in the US), but one we'll make sure to be clear about to our distribution partners in the future.
To date, this has been the largest Kickstarter we've fulfilled and there were certainly a number of growing pains that have come with it. That said, we're almost there on this last leg of fulfillment for the project. I know both Felix and will both be so relieved when we start hearing of our Euro backers receiving their books.

Hey Everyone,
Happy New Year!
Things are rolling over here at Wildsea HQ. We hit the ground running and are hard at work on a bunch of things Wildsea related, including the expansion Storm & Root.
Chief on my mind, however, has been getting our long overdue books to our EU backers.
EU Books
The bad news: we're still at best 45 days away at best from shipping from our Germany Warehouse. We understand the inconvenience and frustration this may have caused.
Please note that you may need to pay additional VAT on your package. In 2022 our experience tells us that looks like around 30% of our shipments were tagged.
Where we're at:
We're currently waiting on our paperwork to clear from both the IRS (expected 01/27/22) and Germany. We've received another round of pushback from our Germany paperwork, and the USA one is still pending. Here's the latest from our VAT agency:
And from the IRS:
Our books are palletized and waiting for the go-ahead to move. We asked about expediting the process by shipping the books while we're waiting for the paperwork to clear, but we've been advised that if we ship the pallet over without a EORI (tax identification number) we might be SOL when it lands. It may get lost or held up indefinitely or any number of terrible outcomes.
Why the headache?
Once we have the clearances , we'll effectively be able to import goods into the European Union with our goods VAT rebatable upon sales receipt. What that means is basically we as an entity pay the VAT for importing goods when they come in, but as we make sales we get rebated that amount upon sales.
And theoretically, this should be a one-time thing that once we have setup, we won't have to do again. It allows us to establish the supply chain a little more directly, etc. etc. Full disclosure, we're definitely learning as we go here, and there have most definitely been learning pains. But we are learning and adapting.
Contingencies?
We've also been keeping our options open as a contingency talking to other publishers in the EU or with distribution solutions. But, that is where we are. This is taking a lot longer than we thought it would, but we're hoping that it's just a one time thing we have to do which will allow things to go seamlessly from here on out.
Sorry, European backers. Wish there was better news on this front. And with that, I'll throw it back to Felix!
And Here's A Bit From Felix
Hello people, sorry that Ray didn't have better news to share there. On the one hand, we aim for transparency where we can so that people know what's going on. On the other hand, when dealing with governments and taxation, it's hard enough for Ray to explain to me what's going on, let alone the backing public. It's not the best situation but, as Ray said, we are doing the best that we can.
So, with little I can do on that front, I've been soldiering on with both Storm & Root and the Wild Words Engine SRD/Toolkit. I'll hit them in that order...
Storm & Root Update
So, the process of creating Storm & Root has been wholly different from working on the Core Wildsea book. The biggest change is speed - now that I actually have the base game, world, and mechanics established, it's far easier to get from the 'idea whilst eating a yoghurt' phase to the 'words on a page with accompanying art' phase. I've also got a handy dandy excel spreadsheet that tells me everyhting that's done, partly done and needing to be done, which is something I didn't have last time around. I know, I know, adult-style project organization is hardly the most thrilling subject, but it gets us where we're going.
And where we're going, this time around, is to prototerritories!
Much like a protoleviathan is like a leviathan, but much smaller and easier to handle, a prototerritory is like a normal territory, but disconnected from the bigger theme of a reach. While we do have some new reaches for you (no worries there), we've also got a selection or prototerritories, enclosed environments with odd, reach-like feels to them that your crews might be able to run into anywhere on the waves rather than in a single defined place. These also run the gamut from floating broken templescapes, as pictured above, to ancient, tottering drilling-rigs and areas of creeping, crezzer-infused knotwood. I hope you'll enjoy encountering them, and the mysteries they hold, as much as I've enjoyed writing them!
Wild Words Update
So, OGL? Yeah, that's a whole mess that I'm not going to get into here. If you want my opinion on it, think for a few seconds about what a sensible person who values their community would hink, and assume we're on the same page. Genuine love for all of the other developers that are having to grapple with these potential changes right now - I can't quite imagine that level of fiscal frustration.
But over in Felix-Town we have our own little Engine that doesn't threaten to eat all of your revenue, and it's closer to completion than you migt think. The process of making the Wild Words SRD/Toolkit has been a tough one, stripping out everything wildsea-related to work out how the fundamentals of the system work for other things... And, more importantly, how to get that across in text. Some bits are short and snappy, some are long and wordy, but more and more of it is going in the green 'finished' column, page by page. Here's a taster of how the toolkit introduces aspects to a potential designer...
And I'm Running Some Games!
To celebrate the near-completion of Storm and Root, and to test out a few of the new places and hazards I've been creating for it, I'm runing some games over on the Discord for the next few weeks at least. It's been a while since I actually got the chance to run anything - that place used to be a hive of mid-play activity during the Covid years, after all - but if anyone would like to drop in and play and/or listen, hop into the discord and sign up for some of the upcoming game slots. You'll hear me, you'll see new stuff, and you might even have fun. :P
